Update 15 December 2018
The Polish-Spanish production “Another Day of Life” by Raúl de la Fuente and Damian Nenow has been named European Animated Feature Film 2018.
Based on Kapuściński’s book of the same title, the work of Damian Nenow and Raúl de la Fuente combines feature-length animation with documentary elements. The film is a co-production of five countries. The Polish-language version features the voices of Marcin Dorociński, Arkadiusz Jakubik, Olga Bołądź and Tomasz Borkowski.
“Another Day of Life” is the story of a three-month expedition by the great reporter Ryszard Kapuściński into an Angola consumed by war and chaos, where the front line shifts like a kaleidoscope. Following the book, the viewer begins the journey with Kapuściński in 1975 in Luanda, the Angolan capital. Decolonisation is under way after Portugal’s Carnation Revolution. The Portuguese are hurriedly abandoning the city’s luxury districts. They are terrified by the prospect of an assault on the capital. They pack all their possessions into wooden crates. In Luanda the shops are closing, the public services are disappearing, mountains of rubbish are growing. From the abandoned city Kapuściński files his dispatches to the Polish Press Agency each day. In the end he sets off on a lethally dangerous journey into the interior. Barely escaping with his life, he realises he is witnessing events that will require him to step outside the role of observer. Can a reporter withhold a sensational discovery for the sake of a higher cause?

“It was the events in Angola that made Kapuściński start writing differently. Not about war in general, but about its individual protagonists. The film was never meant to illustrate the book. It is very much a story about Ryszard Kapuściński, who is going to write that book. About how he grows into the role of a writer. The story is very universal, and that is part of what drew us to it. Kapuściński is pulled into the vortex of a deeply chaotic war. There are many such conflicts not far from Poland’s borders,” says Damian Nenow, co-writer and co-director, responsible for the entire animated section.
