The Shadow of the Sun

First published: 1998

A collection of reportages by Ryszard Kapuściński about Africa. Fascinating stories about the continent's cultures, people, and history.

About the Book

The Shadow of the Sun (Heban in Polish) is a collection of reportages and memoirs from Ryszard Kapuściński’s many years of travel in Africa, published in 1998. The book sums up more than four decades of the author’s experience on the continent — from his account of the birth of independent Ghana in 1957 to observations from the end of the 20th century — and is widely regarded as his reporting masterpiece.

It is not a single, continuous narrative but a mosaic of dozens of texts: scenes, portraits and reflections that together form a multidimensional image of Africa. Kapuściński deliberately rejects the perspective of the tourist or the correspondent shut away in a luxury hotel — he lives among ordinary people, in crumbling houses, falls ill with cerebral malaria and tuberculosis, and travels by truck through the bush. From this closeness comes his exceptional sensitivity to detail and everyday life.

The author presents Africa not as a uniform, exotic “other world” but as an immensely diverse continent — full of distinct cultures, languages, religions and landscapes. He writes about the legacy of colonialism, the difficult birth of independent states, civil and ethnic wars, but also about the sun, the heat, the tree as shelter, and the dignity of people living in extremely harsh conditions. The Shadow of the Sun won numerous awards and became a bestseller in Poland and in many countries around the world.
