Imperium
About the Book
Imperium is Ryszard Kapuściński’s monumental reportage published in 1993, devoted to the Soviet Union — its vastness, its many nations, its everyday life and its collapse. The book spans more than half a century of the author’s personal experience, from childhood to the fall of the system in 1991.
Its starting point is the year 1939, when the Red Army marches into Pińsk, the town where the young Kapuściński lived — his first, dramatic encounter with Soviet power. The next layers of the book are a great journey by the Trans-Siberian Railway and through the Asian republics in the 1950s and 60s, and finally a series of trips between 1989 and 1991, during which the reporter witnesses the agony and disintegration of the empire with his own eyes.
Kapuściński crosses unimaginable distances — from Magadan and Kolyma in the Far East, through Siberia, the Caucasus and Central Asia, to the European part of Russia. From these journeys emerges the image of a state built on violence, the Gulag and fear, and at the same time a portrait of ordinary people trying to live in the shadow of a totalitarian system. Blending reportage with historical and philosophical reflection, the author creates a multi-layered narrative about one of the most important phenomena of the 20th century.
