From Africa
About the Book
From Africa (Z Afryki) is a book unique in Ryszard Kapuściński’s output, published in 2000, in which word meets image. Alongside the texts it contains photographs taken by the author during his many years of travel across the continent — for Kapuściński was not only a writing reporter but also an attentive photographer.
The album gathers images of African nature, landscapes, people and scenes of everyday life, arranged into a personal account of a continent the author loved and to which he devoted a large part of his life. The photographs — often raw, full of light and space — complement what Kapuściński described in The Shadow of the Sun and his other books: the beauty, the hardship and the dignity of African life, as well as the tensions between tradition and change.
It is a book for everyone who wishes to see Africa through Kapuściński’s eyes in the most literal sense. From Africa shows that his way of looking at the world — attentive, empathetic, free of exoticising — found expression not only in words but also in the frame. It is an intimate declaration of love for the continent and its people.
